The Benefits of Goodreads.com as an Author
Goodreads.com is the largest website in the world for readers and book recommendations. I believe the last time I checked it had 13 million members worldwide. I joined Goodreads as a reader about 2 years ago, strictly for book recommendations and to keep track of what I’ve read and what I want to read, but Goodreads is so much more.
As an author, it offers the Goodreads Author Program which has a profile of you and your titles, allows you to write a blog, and do giveaways of paperback copies of your book. I just completed my first giveaway. Before the giveaway went live, I only had 6 people add my book to their to-be-read list (half of them were family). After the giveaway, now I have 415 people who’ve added my book to their to-be-read list (complete strangers who liked my synopsis/cover so much that they want to read the book).
800 avid readers entered to win the 10 paperback copies entered. I did mine worldwide. It will cost me more in shipping, but in the end, it will spread my name and novel around the world. I will be putting a note in each shipment asking if they could so kindly leave a review on any site about Culture Shock and I’ll be sending 2 bookmarks per shipment as well. One for the winner to keep and one for a friend of theirs that may like to read Culture Shock.
The Goodreads Author Program is completely free! I’ve been 100% happy with it. I’ve been able to connect with readers in the thousands of groups they have, specifically in my genre. I’ve also been able to connect with bloggers to do author spotlights or reviews on their blog of the book. Lastly, I’ve been able to connect with other authors. I’m surprised by the generosity of other authors to help spread the word. They have done extraordinary favors for me and in return I do for them.
Goodreads is an exceptional community connecting readers to books and readers to authors. I’m glad to be a Goodreads Author and fully promote it to other authors to join in as well. It’s paying off for me. I can’t wait to do another giveaway and spread the word of Culture Shock a little more.
